Richards' Canoe Rental was opened on July 4, 1976 by Karen & Jerry Richard, with children Robert (12) and Renee (4).
All 5 of our canoes were rented that first weekend. There was a write up in the National Geographic about the Eleven Point River the following year. We were also told there was a gas shortage. Gas rose to $0.64 per gallon. Business dropped a little. Some people were afraid to go out of the city fearing they might not get gas to get back home, but this crisis soon came to pass.
Twenty-nine years later we are still here. Now, we have 125 canoes, 12 sit upon kayaks & tubes. There is another gas crises, with prices of approximately $2.25 per gallon, but business is still good.
The River has remanded much the same through out the 29 years. We have seen many things - stock market lows and highs, canoeists in the snow, sleet and rain, as well floods and droughts. Richards' Canoe Rental was one of the first outfitters to be offered a U.S.F.S. permit to operate in a national forest.
We are continuing to grow. One of the changes is Renee now drives the vans hauling people and pulling trailers. That is quite a difference from the 4 year old child she was when we started the business. Now we have grandchildren helping us - Jason is 13 and Jessica is 11.
You all come float and visit our family on the Eleven Point River.
