Richard's Canoe Rental was opened for business on July 4, 1976 and has continued as a family owned and operated service since that day.
All 5 of our canoes were rented that first weekend. There was a write up in the National Geographic about the Eleven Point River the following year. We were also told there was a gas shortage. Gas rose to $0.64 per gallon. Business dropped a little. Some people were afraid to go out of the city fearing they might not get gas to get back home, but this crisis soon came to pass.
We started in 1976, and we are still here. Now, we have 125 canoes, 40 sit-on-top kayaks & 24 tubes. There is another gas crisis, with prices of over $2.00 per gallon, but business is still good.
The River has remained much the same through out the time Richard's Canoe Rental has been located here. We have seen many things - stock market lows and highs, canoeists in the snow, sleet and rain, as well floods and droughts. Richards' Canoe Rental was one of the first outfitters to be offered a U.S.F.S. permit to operate in a national forest.
We are continuing to grow thanks to the loyal patronage of our great customers, many who come here frequently.
You all come float and visit our family on the Eleven Point River.
